The Boulevard Changes
I stride down the boulevard
Faces full of wisdom
Faces riddled with pain
How long can this last
How long can this sustain?
I’ve seen these souls before
Some cheer and some detest
I do not see between them
Because neither are our best
We are all one unit
Our community is knit with sight
When we dwell on what could go wrong
We shut out what could go right
You are all my people
Be it trans or gay or straight
Today we celebrate queer pride
And thankfully not a day too late
For this moment that we have
We can see the beauty all around
The colors of our identities
Based entirely in luscious sounds
When that beating inside our chest
Rages through echoes of distant times
We’re reminded that our histories
So often parallel and rhyme
No matter who we see
Across aisles that are divded
There’s always a better tomorrow
But we must choose to live inside it
I stand before you queer
And yet I am a human
I’m only living my truth
Despite my fears that are looming
As we go forth into the world
Our time for unity has come
Look at who disjoins us
Our progress being undone
Our quarrel isn’t sexuality
Being lesbian, bi, or ace
It’s about the lives we wish to have
The struggles that we all face
No one is really a demon
And so few of us are saints
We’re all just human on purpose
With flaws we dare not erase
Why must we cast out others
And why should any of us hide
We are all one community
We all should live with pride
This month was proclaimed as a symbol
To show the elegance of realization
To celebrate our unique cultures
To demonstrate our imagination
How far could we all go
If only we gave a smile
What would our faces be
If our progress took us miles?
You, my friend, are special
We all are, it’s true
Together with our triumphs
The only ceiling above us is blue
Today our home is changing
And our faces with it too
But if there’s one thing that will stay the same
Is that no matter the person, I’ll always believe
In you
